about

This song came out of a year-long residency as songwriter in residence at my church. During this time I would try to write songs out of the scripture that we were using on a particular Sunday. This song came from the IIPeter 3. The particular phrase “With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day” is one that struck me before I tried to put it into song, and so I tried to center this song around that phrase. I also put the song in the form of the letter that it is, in hopes that it would be another chance for the words in the epistle to sink in. This passage is a good reminder that our time is not God’s time, and that though we may long for faster solutions to our problems, God’s patience is not some arbitrary lesson, but serves God’s aim of our very salvation. It is also a comfort to remember that in God’s plan is not arbitrary, but is out of his own longing for every soul—including our particular soul. God keeps his promises in God’s time, bringing full salvation in that time.

lyrics

G
Bear in mind, dear friends
C
As we make our way
G D
as we live toward the day of God
G
When the path is rough
C
When trials come
G D G
bear in mind His living word

EM F#
yes do not forget
G C
That to the Lord Our God
Em D/F# C
One day is like a thousand years
CDGC
And a thousand years are like a day
CDG
To the One who guides our way

The Lord is not slow
He does not forget
He has not turned His face away
His patience means
Our salvation
For He longs for every soul

Just like a thief
The day will come
With a roar the sky will be gone
After fire will come
new earth and heavn’
The home of righteousness

Ordinary Time

They met in a “History of Christian Worship” class in seminary, where they discovered a shared love for old songs in danger of being forgotten. The band’s oeuvre seamlessly weaves the hymns of generations past with their own new songs—often indistinguishably—producing a
sound that ranges from bluegrass-tinged Americana to sacred harp hymn arrangements.
